Career opportunities as an Art Director

Art directors play a vital role in promoting the product or the brand being advertised under the supervision of creative Director. Art Directors job involves working on a particular promotion of a brand from the start to the finish. They are involved in working on several projects at a time and can be involved in all of the different forms of Advertising in an Ad agency or as a freelancer.

Art Director An art directors job involves working on a particular brief, closely with a creative copywriter or with other members in the creative team, initiating and generative innovative ideas to present the client for the promotion of the product. Art director spends most of it time indoors or in studios working on designs in order to work effectively on projects to produce an effective campaign for the client’s brand.

Art director normally works in an Ad agency or works as a freelancer. An Art Director visits Television studios and works on locations where ads are being filmed on locations which might involve working at odd hours or staying away from home for short periods.

Moving to work in different agencies is common. With added experience an Art director can chose to work in area of specific interest in any area of Advertising. It offers growth opportunity to work as creative directors or set up our own agencies or use their art abilities in other creative fields such as design or film production.

Educational requirements:

There is no set qualification outlined for the position of Advertising Art Director, although a degree is a must for an entrant. Art and degree courses are widely available at Universities and art colleges. You can even opt for a foundation course in art and design before starting on a degree course for which the minimum starting age is of 17 or 18.

Post graduate Degrees and diplomas are also available for people with varied interests in art and design subject. Entrants usually require attaining a first class in the appropriate subject.

Attending is a useful way of polishing your skills to create a portfolio of your own art and design work suitable to the industry trends and standards. Internships or relevant work experience in the similar field is an added advantage if planning to opt for the position.

Skills and personal qualities needed to be an Art director are

  • Being highly creative taking initiatives and being innovative
  • Relevant computer skills in relevant art and design and software packages.
  • Have a thorough understanding of photography, positioning, current trends and printing techniques.
  • Excellent inter personal and communication skills.
  • A team player
  • Highly motivated and organized with a keen eye for detail
  • Being able to cope with criticism effectively and work under tremendous work pressures
  • Being able to work with strict budgets and deadlines.

Creating a good advertising needs a lot of intelligence, creating good ads, great promotional ideas and mind you it’s not easy to get them. But once you get it the creative satisfaction is immense. Ideally if you are capable of working in all these conditions you stand a chance of being Advertising Art Director
